Expert Tips For Maintaining Good Posture Throughout The Day

Good Posture

Poor posture can lead to back and neck pain, fatigue and muscle strain. Maintaining good posture is extremely important, especially because we live in a world that relies on technology and most of us are hunched over laptops and cellphones all day.

It is important to maintain good posture when you stand, sit and lie down and the following tips will help you achieve this throughout your day:

While Sitting

Sitting at a desk all day long can be challenging because it’s hard to sit in the proper position for long periods of time. Sitting for too long can present a number of problems and it is important to remember to have a good posture to prevent pain. Try to keep your back straight and prevent your shoulders from hunching forward, which is easier said than done because when we are busy and tired, we naturally lean forward and hunch. Sitting with a proper posture will allow your weight to be evenly distributed as your feet are flat to the ground. The use of an ergonomic chair is ideal for those who sit for most of their workday. You should also make sure that the height of your chair is adjusted properly so that your knees bend at a natural angle.

While Standing

It is natural for a person to slouch while standing because of gravity, especially whenever they are tired or busy. While it can be difficult to do, it is very important to try to maintain a good posture while standing by keeping your weight on the balls of your feet and your knees slightly bent while having your feet positioned shoulder-width apart. Your arms should hang naturally at your sides and while your legs should be straight, they should not be locked. Ultimately, your head, shoulders, hips and knees should all line up.

While Lounging

Getting under the covers in bed is something we all love to do and while channel surfing is fun, you must lounge properly so that your spine does not suffer and must position yourself correctly to prevent backache. Watching TV while in bed can strain your neck and lower back, which is why it is generally not recommended. If you do want to lounge in bed, prop pillows behind your back for support and place a pillow under your knees as well while your legs are bent. When it’s time to sleep, doing so on your back is best because no additional pressure is placed on your head, neck or spine, so try this position as it can improve your posture drastically.
