How ICBC Enhanced Care Works

Since May 2021, ICBC's Enhanced Care model replaced the old fault-based system in BC. Under Enhanced Care, all injury benefits are available regardless of who caused the accident. This means:

  • No need to establish fault before starting treatment

  • Direct billing — we bill ICBC directly, no upfront cost to you in most cases

  • A defined number of pre-approved treatments in the first 12 weeks, no prior approval needed

  • Access to chiropractic, massage therapy, physiotherapy, and other care as clinically indicated

  • Treatment benefits available whether you were a driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian

After the initial pre-approved period, continued treatment requires a treatment plan submitted to and approved by ICBC — we handle this as part of your ongoing care.

Why You Should Come In Early

The most common mistake after a motor vehicle accident is waiting to see if symptoms resolve on their own. This is understandable — the adrenaline response after a collision often masks significant injury, and many patients feel fine for 24–72 hours before symptoms peak. But early treatment produces significantly better outcomes.

Research is clear: patients who receive prompt, appropriate care after an MVA recover faster, experience fewer residual symptoms, and have a substantially lower risk of developing chronic pain. The tissue injury window — the period during which treatment has the greatest impact on recovery trajectory — is the first 4–6 weeks after the accident.

There's also a practical reason to come in quickly: your ICBC claim is documented from the date of your first assessment. If new symptoms emerge later, having an early clinical record that includes your full presentation protects your claim.

Common Injuries We Treat After a Car Accident

Motor vehicle accidents cause a specific pattern of injuries to the spine, joints, and soft tissue. The injuries we most commonly treat in Saanichton MVA patients include:

Whiplash and Cervical Spine Injury

The most common MVA injury. The rapid acceleration-deceleration of the neck tears soft tissue, strains cervical muscles and ligaments, and can injure the facet joints and discs. Symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and arm symptoms. See our whiplash page for a full breakdown of grades and recovery timelines.

Lower Back and Thoracic Spine Injury

The lumbar and mid-back are frequently compressed and sheared during impact — particularly in rear-end and side-impact collisions. Lower back pain is the second most common post-MVA presentation and can involve disc, facet joint, and soft tissue injury.

Shoulder and Upper Extremity Injury

Bracing against the steering wheel or dashboard, seatbelt loading, and direct impact can all injure the shoulder, wrist, or elbow. We assess the full upper extremity as part of our MVA intake.

Headaches

Post-MVA headaches are almost always cervicogenic in origin — driven by the same upper cervical joint and soft tissue injury that causes neck pain. They respond to the same treatment.

Jaw Pain (TMJ)

The TMJ can be injured in the same collision mechanism that causes whiplash. See our TMJ page for more detail — ICBC covers TMJ treatment after an MVA.

Your First Appointment

Here's what to expect when you come in for your first post-MVA visit:

  • Comprehensive intake — we'll go through exactly what happened, the mechanism of impact, and all current symptoms including those that seem minor

  • Full physical assessment — range of motion, joint assessment, neurological screening, orthopaedic testing

  • Diagnosis and initial treatment — we'll often begin treatment in the first session where appropriate

  • ICBC documentation — we complete the required forms and set up direct billing from the start

  • Treatment plan — you'll leave with a clear picture of what we're treating, how many sessions to expect, and what the recovery timeline looks like

Bring your ICBC claim number if you have one — but if you haven't filed a claim yet, we can help walk you through that process as well.

Our Multi-Disciplinary MVA Team

Motor vehicle accident injuries often involve multiple tissue types — joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves — and respond best to care that addresses all of them. At Saanichton Chiropractic Group, our chiropractors, registered massage therapists, and athletic therapist all work under the same roof and coordinate directly on MVA care plans. ICBC covers treatment from multiple disciplines — meaning you don't have to choose.

Frequently Asked Questions — ICBC Chiropractic in Saanichton

Do I need to have filed an ICBC claim before I come in?

No. You can come in before your claim is filed. We can begin treatment and document your injuries, and add the ICBC billing once your claim number is available. If you're unsure how to file a claim, call ICBC at 1-800-910-4222 or visit their website — it's straightforward and can be done online.

Is there any cost to me?

In most cases, no. Under Enhanced Care, ICBC covers the full cost of approved treatment. There may be a small gap if your treatment extends beyond approved limits before an extension is authorized — we'll let you know clearly before that happens and manage the extension request on your behalf.

How many treatments will ICBC cover?

In the first 12 weeks, a set number of sessions are pre-approved without requiring ICBC sign-off. Beyond that, we submit a treatment plan for approval based on your clinical progress. The total number of funded treatments depends on your injury severity and how your recovery is progressing.

What if my symptoms started a few weeks after the accident?

Delayed symptom onset is very common after MVAs — particularly for disc injuries and chronic soft tissue damage. You can still file a claim and access treatment benefits. ICBC allows claims to be filed after the fact, though the sooner the better. Come in and we'll document the presentation and its relationship to the accident.

Can I see a chiropractor and a massage therapist on the same ICBC claim?

Yes. ICBC Enhanced Care covers multiple disciplines — chiropractic and massage therapy can both be billed on the same claim. We coordinate billing between our practitioners so you don't need to manage multiple claims or paperwork streams.
