Whether you're choosing a chiropractor for the first time or seeing someone new, a few good questions make a big difference. They help you find the right fit, understand what's causing your pain and know exactly what your treatment plan involves. This guide covers how to choose a chiropractor, the questions worth asking before and during your first visit, and the signs of a good clinic.

How to Choose a Chiropractor

  • Check registration. Chiropractors in BC must be registered with the provincial regulatory college. Registration means they have completed an accredited four-year Doctor of Chiropractic program, passed national board exams and meet ongoing practice standards.

  • Look for relevant experience. If you're dealing with a sports injury, a chiropractor with sports specialty training, such as the Fellowship of the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (FRCCSS), will have extra experience with athletic injuries and rehab. Others focus on pregnancy, older adults or workplace injuries.

  • Ask about their approach. Good chiropractic care today includes more than adjustments. Look for a clinic that combines hands-on treatment with exercise, education and a clear plan to get you independent.

  • Read reviews. Google reviews and word of mouth from friends, family and your doctor give you a feel for how a clinic treats people.

  • Consider the team. A clinic with massage therapists, acupuncturists and athletic therapists under one roof can coordinate your care rather than sending you elsewhere.

  • Check billing. Ask whether the clinic direct bills your extended health plan, ICBC or WorkSafeBC.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

  • Do you treat my type of problem? Most chiropractors treat back pain, neck pain and headaches. If you have a specific issue, such as a sports injury, jaw pain or pregnancy-related pain, ask about their experience with it.

  • What does the first visit include? A good first visit includes a thorough history and examination before any treatment. Ask how long it takes.

  • Do you direct bill? Find out whether they bill your extended health plan, ICBC or WorkSafeBC directly, and what you'll pay out of pocket.

Questions to Ask at Your First Visit

  • What do you think is causing my pain? You should leave with a clear explanation of what's going on, in plain language.

  • What treatment do you recommend, and why? Ask what techniques will be used, such as joint manipulation, mobilization, soft tissue therapy or exercise, and what alternatives there are if you'd rather not have a particular treatment.

  • How many visits should I expect? A good chiropractor gives you an estimated timeline and checkpoints to measure progress, rather than an open-ended commitment.

  • What can I do at home? Exercises, activity changes and workstation or sleep adjustments often make the biggest difference between visits.

  • Are there side effects? Mild soreness or stiffness for a day or two after treatment is common. Ask what's normal and when to call.

  • When would you refer me elsewhere? A good chiropractor knows when imaging, a medical opinion or another practitioner is the better option.

Signs of a Good Chiropractic Clinic

  • They take a full history and examine you before treating you.

  • They explain your diagnosis and plan clearly, and welcome questions.

  • They give you exercises and self-care so you aren't reliant on them.

  • They set goals and reassess your progress regularly.

  • They don't pressure you into long prepaid packages or use scare tactics.

  • They work with your family doctor and other providers when needed.

Questions for Specific Problems

  • Back pain: Which activities should I modify, and which should I keep doing?

  • Headaches: Could my neck, posture or jaw be contributing to my headaches?

  • Sports injuries: When can I return to training, and what do I need to be able to do first?

  • Car accident injuries: How does ICBC coverage work, and how many visits are covered?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. You can book directly with a chiropractor in BC. Some extended health plans ask for a doctor's note, so check your plan if you're unsure.

Is chiropractic care covered?

Most extended health plans include chiropractic coverage. Chiropractic care is also covered for eligible ICBC and WorkSafeBC claims, and MSP provides limited coverage for those on premium assistance. See our insurance coverage guide for details.

What should I wear to my first appointment?

Comfortable clothing you can move in, such as athletic wear. Shorts are helpful for hip, knee or ankle problems.
