Acupuncture In Saanichton, BC

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core pillar of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — a complete medical system with over 3,000 years of clinical history. TCM treats the body as a whole: physical symptoms, emotional wellbeing, and systemic health are all part of the same picture.

Our acupuncturists don't just place needles — they begin with a thorough assessment of your health history, sleep, digestion, stress, and current symptoms to build a TCM diagnosis specific to you.

Every treatment plan is tailored to the root cause, not just the presenting complaint.

Acupuncture integrates naturally with chiropractic and massage therapy — many of our patients combine treatments for a more complete result.

What to Expect

Your first session begins with a full assessment — not a quick intake form, but a real conversation about what's going on in your body. From this, your acupuncturist builds a treatment plan and begins treatment in the same appointment.

Treatment uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles. They're nothing like injection needles — most patients feel little to nothing during insertion. Some experience a mild warmth, aching, or tingling at the needle site, which is normal and signals point activation.

Needles are retained for 20–30 minutes. Most patients experience deep relaxation on the table — it's common to feel calm or even sleepy. Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health depends on the free flow of Qi (pronounced 'chee') — the vital force that moves through a network of pathways called meridians. When Qi is blocked, deficient, or out of balance, symptoms develop. Acupuncture points are specific locations where Qi can be accessed and regulated.

From a modern physiological perspective, acupuncture works by modulating the nervous system, reducing inflammation, stimulating local tissue healing, and influencing the neuroendocrine stress response.

The TCM and biomedical explanations describe the same clinical effects through different frameworks — both have value.

Conditions We Treat

Musculoskeletal Pain

Acupuncture is used alongside our chiropractic and massage therapy services for the full spectrum of musculoskeletal pain — neck pain, lower back pain, headaches and migraines, shoulder pain, joint pain, and post-MVA conditions including whiplash. For many patients, combining chiropractic for joint mechanics and acupuncture for the nervous system and inflammatory response produces better results than either alone.

Women's Health

One of the strongest application areas in TCM. Our acupuncturists treat:

  • Menstrual irregularity, dysmenorrhoea (painful periods), and PMS

  • Endometriosis — symptom management and support alongside medical treatment

  • Fertility support, including for patients undergoing IVF or other assisted reproduction

  • Prenatal care — morning sickness, pregnancy discomfort, and birth preparation

  • Menopausal symptoms — hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes

Acupuncture for women's health works within a TCM framework addressing hormonal balance, circulation, and the mind-body connection — often providing meaningful relief where other options are limited.

Stress, Anxiety, and Sleep

Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol, and modulates the neuroendocrine stress response. Patients with chronic stress, anxiety, and sleep disruption often notice significant improvement across a course of treatment. We work alongside your GP or mental health provider — acupuncture is a complement to, not a replacement for, psychological care where that's indicated.

Neurological and Systemic Conditions

  • Concussion — supportive care for persistent headache, dizziness, and sleep disruption

  • Dizziness and vertigo — particularly post-concussion or idiopathic

  • Tinnitus

  • Digestive conditions — IBS, bloating, nausea, reflux

  • Fatigue and immune support

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Acupuncture works cumulatively — effects build across a course of treatment:

  • Acute conditions: 4–6 sessions often sufficient

  • Chronic conditions: 8–12 sessions as an initial course, with reassessment

  • Women's health and hormonal conditions: 2–3 menstrual cycles to assess full benefit

  • Stress and sleep: significant improvement typically within 4–6 sessions

  • Maintenance: some patients continue with monthly or seasonal sessions for ongoing wellbeing

We'll give you a realistic treatment plan at your first appointment and reassess at each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

For most patients, no — or minimally. Acupuncture needles are solid and hair-thin, nothing like injection needles. You may feel a mild aching, warmth, or tingling at the needle site. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is.

Is acupuncture covered by extended health insurance?

Many extended health plans include an acupuncture benefit — typically a set dollar amount per year. Check your plan for coverage details. We provide itemised receipts for submission.

Can I combine acupuncture with chiropractic or massage?

Yes — and this is often the most effective approach. Our practitioners communicate directly and coordinate care plans. Combining chiropractic for structure, massage for soft tissue, and acupuncture for the nervous system frequently produces better outcomes than any single modality alone.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes, with appropriate modifications. Acupuncture is commonly used during pregnancy for morning sickness, back pain, pelvic discomfort, and birth preparation. Certain points are avoided — our practitioners are trained in prenatal protocols and screen carefully at each session.

I'm nervous about needles — is there an alternative?

Needle anxiety is common. The needles are genuinely very different from medical needles and most anxious patients are relieved after the first experience. If you'd prefer to start without needles, acupressure and other TCM techniques can be used — discuss this at your first appointment.
