Prenatal Massage Therapy in Saanichton, BC

Pregnancy brings significant changes to your body — and significant discomfort with them.
Lower back pain, hip aches, swollen ankles, sciatic nerve pain, round ligament tightness, and difficulty sleeping are extremely common in the second and third trimesters. Prenatal massage is one of the most effective ways to manage these symptoms safely during pregnancy.
At Saanichton Chiropractic Group, our Registered Massage Therapists are trained and experienced in prenatal massage. We use positioning that is safe and comfortable throughout pregnancy — including side-lying and supported positions that eliminate pressure on the abdomen. Treatments are adapted based on your trimester, symptoms, and pregnancy history.

Benefits of Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage has a strong evidence base for symptom relief during pregnancy. Here's what it can help with:
Lower Back and Hip Pain
The most common reason pregnant patients seek massage. As the uterus expands and the centre of gravity shifts forward, the lumbar spine takes on significantly increased load — and the surrounding muscles work overtime to compensate. Prenatal massage works the lumbar erectors, quadratus lumborum, hip flexors, and gluteal muscles to reduce tension and restore mobility. For many patients, this is the most effective relief they find between prenatal appointments.
Sciatic Nerve Pain
Sciatic-type symptoms are extremely common during pregnancy — caused by a combination of the growing uterus compressing the sciatic nerve, and piriformis tightness as the pelvis widens and the gait pattern changes. Prenatal massage can directly address the piriformis and surrounding hip external rotators, providing relief that stretching alone often can't achieve. If you have significant leg pain or numbness, our chiropractors can also assess for a cervical or lumbar contribution — pregnancy doesn't prevent chiropractic care when appropriate.
Swelling (Oedema)
Fluid retention in the hands, feet, and ankles is common in the second and third trimesters. Lymphatic drainage techniques used in prenatal massage help mobilise fluid accumulation and reduce swelling. This can significantly improve comfort — particularly for patients who are on their feet for work.
Sleep and Stress
Anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and the general physical discomfort of late pregnancy create a cycle that compounds fatigue. Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces cortisol, and improves sleep quality in the sessions following treatment. Many prenatal patients book regular massage specifically for sleep support in the third trimester.
Postural Strain
Forward head posture, rounding of the upper back, and changes in scapular position are common as the chest tightens and the lower back compensates for the growing belly. Prenatal massage includes work on the upper back, pectorals, and neck — not just the lower body — to address the full postural chain.

Frequently Asked Questions — Prenatal Massage in Saanichton
Is massage safe in the first trimester?
The first trimester carries the highest risk of miscarriage, and while massage itself does not cause miscarriage, many practitioners prefer to wait until the second trimester as a precaution. If you want massage in the first trimester, discuss it with your midwife or OB first, and inform your RMT — we'll adapt accordingly.
How often should I get prenatal massage?
It depends on your symptoms and budget. Many patients benefit from monthly sessions through the second trimester, increasing to bi-weekly in the third trimester as discomfort tends to increase. If you have significant sciatic pain or lower back issues, more frequent treatment produces better results. We'll give you a recommendation based on your specific presentation.
Can prenatal massage help get baby into position?
Massage can help with general pelvic balance and muscle symmetry, which may support optimal fetal positioning — but we don't make specific claims about repositioning babies. For breech or posterior presentations, our practitioners can discuss what approaches may be supportive alongside your midwife's guidance.
I have varicose veins — can I still get massage?
Yes, but with modifications. We avoid direct pressure on varicose veins and work around them rather than on them. Deep leg work near significant varicosities is also modified. Inform your RMT about the location and extent of your varicosities at the start of your session.
Can I get a prenatal massage if I've had complications?
Some complications require clearance from your prenatal care provider before massage. If you have or have had preeclampsia, placenta previa, placental abruption, pre-term labour, or significant oedema that's being monitored, please check with your midwife or OB before booking. For straightforward pregnancies without complications, you can book directly.
